Club Awards Scholarships

Two area high school seniors are honored with Greater Philly Illini Scholarships

The Greater Philadelphia Illini Club is pleased to announce its scholarship recipients for the 2010-2011 school year.  Club leaders selected Seoung Kim of Newark, Delaware to receive a $500 scholarship.  John Meehan of Downingtown, Pennsylvania will get a $250 scholarship. 

Seoung Kim will study Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois this fall.  He graduated from the Charter School of Wilmington.  His passion for computer engineering developed through his participation in the First Tech Challenge and his school's Robotics Club.  Seoung Kim told the club in his essay, "As a computer engineer, I hope to advance the existing computer technology and develop the most practical computer."  Kim also volunteers with the Habitat for Humanity and Red Cross.  He also plays the flute in his school's orchestra and at church.

John Meehan plans to study Mechanical Engineering this fall at the U of I.  Meehan is a graduate of Downingtown East High School where he was recently awarded the Class of 2010 "Most Outstanding Boy" by the Downingtown Alumni Association.  Meehan graduateed in the top 5% of his high school class.  He was involved in his school's Robotics Club, Guitar Club and National Honors Society.  Meehan also is an amateur music recording technician.  His socials studies teacher remarked on his fine character in a recommendation letter, "his openness to new places, peoples, cultures and customs; a keen intelligence with which to analyze and order his experience; irrepressible curriosity; and a remarkable ability for dealing with people."
